Social injustice to women: A Study of Jaishree Misra’s Ancient Promises

Abstract

Jaishree Misra, an Indian novelist, deals with the Indian middle class social life in her novel. Her novels directly deal with common people’s life in India. Her novel also deals with the injustice to the women, which starts from the home and extends to society. Misra has written more than ten novels with the theme of social injustice to women. In appropriate treatment of girl child at home is the major theme which was discussed in her novels. Her novel Ancient Promises depicts the vulnerability of the traditional social order. As the title suggests, social injustice for women fails to fulfil the promises of the girl child. The author depicts the most terrible side of the discrimination  against a girl child who dreams high and has a desire to reach her vision. The plight of the female protagonist Janu forms the major theme of the novel. Janu belongs to a Maraar community a high caste Hindhu family in Kerala. In Kerala people who belong to Maraar community may perform  music at Temple which belongs to  the kingdom of Cochin and Malabar. Janu who belongs to Maraar community was born with Kerala culture and was brought up in Delhi culture. Janu who was a girl child of orthodox Hindhu family in Kerala encounters to get a free space in the society. Janu’s western education gives her enough guts to face the society.
